Korean Cleansing Balms: Buying and Rinsing Guide

The checked Banila Co and Beauty of Joseon cleansing-balm directions start on dry skin, then add water to emulsify before rinsing. The main buying differences are the exact formula, dispensing format and any follow-up cleanser specified by the brand.

Choose the format before the brand

A balm makes sense to consider when you prefer taking a scoop from a pot rather than dispensing a liquid. Beauty of Joseon's own FAQ distinguishes its solid Radiance Cleansing Balm from its liquid Ginseng Cleansing Oil. It presents both as first cleansers, rather than declaring the solid format a stronger cleanser.

A jar changes how you dispense the cleanser, while removal performance depends on the formula. If you prefer a pump bottle, compare the products in our Korean cleansing-oil guide.

Before ordering, decide where you will use it, how you like to dispense cleanser and whether you can find the exact product's directions. If a seller offers several versions with nearly identical packaging, save the full variant name rather than only “cleansing balm.” A review of another jar in the same range cannot answer every question about the one in your basket.

Read these Korean label terms before checkout

Three headings are especially useful on Korean product pages: 사용방법 means directions for use, 전성분 means the full ingredient list, and 용량 means the amount in the package. These are better places to start than a retailer's short claim that a balm is “deep cleansing.”

The Korean official listing for Banila Co Clean It Zero Original 180 ml specifies dry hands, a spatula and a dry face, followed by adding a little water to emulsify and rinsing with lukewarm water. The sequence is part of the product information, not an optional social-media trick.

Its displayed ingredient list also includes 향료, the Korean term for fragrance. If avoiding added fragrance is part of your own shopping criteria, check this field for the exact version you intend to buy. Do not infer the answer from a pale jar, a botanical ingredient on the front or the word “gentle.” This observation concerns the named Original listing checked on October 5, 2026; it is not a statement about every Clean It Zero variant.

Keep the dry massage and the water step separate

The common thread in the checked Banila Co and Beauty of Joseon directions is the order: start dry, massage gently, introduce water, then rinse. Do not collapse this into applying a scoop to an already wet face simply because the product is a cleanser.

For a named-product example, Radiance Cleansing Balm's official directions say to use clean hands on dry skin, massage, add water to emulsify, massage again and rinse. Its published routine then calls for a water-based cleanser. Banila Co's Korean directions describe the emulsifying step followed by a lukewarm rinse. Read what your own product says about the rest of the routine rather than turning one brand's instructions into a rule for every balm.

On Korean instructions, 유화 means emulsification: the step where water is introduced after the dry massage.

Follow the amount and massage time on your own package when specified. The checked instructions do not establish one duration for all balms.

Compare the routine you will actually follow

For the checked Beauty of Joseon Radiance routine, plan for a balm followed by a water-based cleanser. Banila Co’s checked Korean instructions specify emulsifying and rinsing; they do not establish the follow-up steps for other balms. If your aim is a one-product cleanse, Radiance’s published two-step routine does not match that aim.

If you prefer a scoop and spatula, compare the balm variants above. If you prefer a pump, use our cleansing-oil comparison to compare that format. Keep any fragrance restriction beside the exact variant name: the checked Clean It Zero Original listing includes fragrance, so it does not meet an added-fragrance-free buying requirement.

These examples compare manufacturer directions and ingredient information, rather than hands-on removal performance.
