Frieze Week Is Over. Korea's Art Month Runs to September 30

Korea’s September 2026 art program extended beyond Frieze Seoul and Kiaf: it linked 96 museums, four biennales outside Seoul and airport exhibitions. The September festival period has ended. The dates below record the program announced for 2026; confirm any later exhibition visit with its venue.

2026 Korean biennale dates: Busan Aug 29–Nov 1; Gyeonggi Sep 18–Nov 1; Gwangju Sep 5–Nov 15; Jeju Aug 25–Nov 15.

Frieze Seoul ran September 2–5 at COEX with 133 galleries from 30 countries. Kiaf Seoul ran September 2–6 in the same building with 175 galleries from 18 countries, 127 of them Korean. Both are closed.

The 2026 Korea Art Festival (2026 대한민국 미술축제), organized by the Ministry of Culture, Sports and Tourism, ran September 1–30. It linked 96 museums—35 public and 61 private—with four biennales and the two fairs.

None of the four biennales is in Seoul

The four listed biennales are in Busan, Gwangju, Jeju and Gyeonggi Province. Their announced schedules extend into November, beyond the September festival period.

The table is sorted by closing date, earliest first — not by size or prominence.

The English titles above are working translations of the Korean exhibition titles; each foundation's official English wording may differ. Dates match the Korea Art Festival official schedule checked September 10, 2026. Check each venue for daily opening hours before booking.

The Gyeonggi Ceramic Biennale is the odd one structurally: it is not a single hall but three cities — Yeoju, Icheon and Gwangju — that have been ceramic production towns for centuries. It also opens latest, on September 18, so it requires a later visit than the September 2–6 fair dates.

Several discount allocations were sold out by September 1

The distinction for visitors is between a discounted allocation selling out and an exhibition closing. Check the venue's regular ticket options separately.

The festival offered discounted tickets for participating events at 30–70% off, on sale from June 15. As of August 26, about 13,000 people had used it. By the time the Ministry briefed press on September 1, the discounted allocations for Kiaf, Frieze Seoul and the Gwangju, Busan and Gyeonggi Ceramic biennales were reported sold out. The one still listed was the Jeju Biennale, at ₩4,000 — half price — through Naver.

Guided art-travel programs also required advance planning. Asia Today reported on September 1 that reservations for the program had already closed.

Ticket prices and sold-out allocations below are a September 1 news snapshot. For a later visit, use the venue’s current booking page.

The show starts before you leave the airport

The festival also placed work in the terminals: 29 media and installation pieces by 16 Korean emerging and mid-career artists at Incheon, Gimpo and Gimhae international airports.

These outlast the festival month. Gimhae closes October 15, Gimpo October 31, Incheon November 14. If you arrive in October or November — after the fairs, after the crowds, with the biennales still open — the airport show is the one part of the program that finds you rather than the other way around.

2026 was the last year Frieze and Kiaf shared a roof

From 2027, Frieze Seoul moves to the Dongdaemun Design Plaza while Kiaf stays at COEX, which is undergoing a partial renovation. Organizers have said the partnership between the two fairs continues.

Practically, "Frieze week" stops being one address. Anyone who has treated the first week of September as a single-building trip will be planning two locations across the city next year.

If you are planning around it

For the September holiday context, see our dated Seoul Chuseok guide. Venue holiday schedules and festival dates are separate notices.

For a practical itinerary, choose the exhibition first, then check its exact venue, opening day and ticket channel. The festival runs nationally, so a Seoul hotel booking alone does not put these four biennales on your doorstep. Gwangju in Gyeonggi Province, one of the ceramic biennale locations, is also distinct from the city hosting the Gwangju Biennale. Keep the province and venue address in your travel notes.

Official schedules checked September 10, 2026: fairs and biennales, airport exhibitions, discount program. Ticket availability is not verified in real time.
